The Hungarian Studies Review is an English-language, interdisciplinary academic journal that publishes scholarly articles and book reviews in the humanities and social sciences relating to Hungary and the surrounding region, and to the Hungarian diaspora. It was founded in 1974 under the title the Canadian-American Review of Hungarian Studies by Prof. Nándor Dreisziger. The journal has been published under its current title since 1981. Prof. Dreisziger stepped down as its editor in 2018.
The Hungarian Studies Review is sponsored by the Hungarian Studies Association of Canada and the Hungarian Studies Association based in the US. It was supported in the past by the National Széchényi Library of Hungary which set up a home page for the Hungarian Studies Review on which the entire text of the journal’s issues between 1981 and 2020 is available. Since the 2019-2020 issue, the journal has been published by Penn State University Press, and is available online through the Scholarly Publishing Collective platform.
HSR dedicated two full articles to the history of the journal, one in the 2019-20 issue (“HSR: A History of New Beginnings and a Tribute to Founding Editor Nándor F. Dreisziger” by Steven Jobbitt and Árpád Klimó) and one in the first issue of 2021 (“A History of Hungarian Studies as Reflected in Forty-Seven Years of Scholarship: Hungarian Studies Review, 1974–2020,” by Árpád Klimó, Leslie Waters, and Steven Jobbitt).
Membership fees in the Hungarian Studies Association of Canada and the Hungarian Studies Association include a subscription to the journal. For more information, visit the HSR website: https://www.psupress.org/journals/jnls_HSR.html
